It’s that time of year again, where we light the bonfire, put on our winter coats and head out to watch the fantastic fireworks. But don’t forget about the hedgehogs this year!
Did you know that hedgehogs love to find places to hide for a snooze, and when you collect all those branches and bits of wood to put in a big pile for your bonfire it’s the perfect place for a little hedgehog to crawl into, and take a nap!
Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures, which means they sleep all day and come out when it’s dark to forage for food, like insects, berries and grubs. Hedgehogs hibernate during Winter; maybe you have a spot in your garden that’s perfect for a hedgehog hibernation! We have to try and help our spiky friends as hedgehog numbers in the UK have dropped in the last 10 years. It's not always easy for them to adjust to living in towns and cities.
So this Bonfire Night, don’t forget to remind your grown-ups to check the fire before it gets lit!
Have you seen a hedgehog before? Why not let us know in the comments below!
