Celebrating Father's Day

After our post on Superhero Dad recently, we felt inspired to talk more about fictional dads! So we compiled our list of top dad's in children's books to share with you all this Father's Day!

We know you’re all dying to find out so here is our
Countdown of the Top 5 Fictional Dads in the Boolino Library!

Straight in at number is five is the dad from My Dad’s a Birdman by David Almond.

Birdman illustrationDad and Lizzie live together in a rainy town in the North of England. It’s just the two of them, accept when Auntie Doreen pops round to check up on them. One day Lizzie finds her dad building a set of wings and trying to fly - he assures her it’s for The Great Human Bird Competition! This is a beautiful and tender story of love, and while dad isn’t perfect he’s full of life, energy and humour making him a wonderful father.

Dropping two places to number four we have Mr Brown from the Paddington Bear stories by Michael Bond.

Mr Brown and PaddingtonNow we know Mr Brown can be a bit of an angry fellow, and he has rather a short temper when it comes to some of Paddington’s escapades, but deep down he’s a big softy and loves his family dearly. Every family needs someone keeping everyone in line, and that’s Mr Brown’s job and really, he’s doing the best he can considering a bear from darkest Peru is living in his house!

A non-mover at number three, Grandpa Joe from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

Grandpa JoeNot all dads are technically your dad and Grandpa Joe is a quirky character that defies the odds to help Charlie get the future he deserves which is pretty heart-warming stuff.

Up four places is Mr Dingle from the Danny Dingle’s Fantastic Finds series by Angie Lake

Mr Dingle, Danny's dadThis is the kind of dad who never really grew up and seeks out every opportunity to use his kid as a great excuse to continue doing silly things, with hilarious consequences. Danny and his friend Percy are always trying to invent new things and they are very lucky to have Danny’s dad on hand with recipes for farting jelly and complex ideas to make submarines and go-karts. We also love that he still has a rivalry, similar to that of his sons as he can’t stand his old boss Mr Trumpshaw, who just so happens to be the father of Danny’s arch-rival, Gareth!

And standing strong at Number One is Mr Weasley from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Arthur Weasley's carHe of course had to be featured, not only for his courage, intelligence and downright niceness but also because this month we’re celebrating 20 years of Harry Potter so we couldn’t have a countdown without one of its characters! Arthur Weasley has his hands full as the head of the Weasley clan, but that doesn’t stop him from being super laid-back, the night that the boys flew his car being a prime example of this! He’s a great believer in the equality of wizards and muggles and offers good advice, good morals and a fair and open-minded outlook on life.

Who would you pick to be in your top fictional dad countdown? We would love to hear your thoughts!
